Anger May Enhance Achievement at Work
Anger has long been seen as leading to distress and impulsive behaviour that more often than not has adverse repercussions. Consequently, employees have been encouraged to be self- restrained, calm and tolerant. On the backdrop of this widely held view, a Harvard Medical School research team has conducted an extensive study over 44 years, and has come to the conclusion that anger at work may actually be quite important in helping us achieve our goals.
The study reveals that employees who hold back and hide their frustration are three times more probable to be dissatisfied with their professional lives than those who let these emotions out. This feeling of professional frustration and all the bottled up negative emotions seem to affect their personal lives in terms of emotional health and intimacy. In comparison, individuals who express their anger in controlled and acceptable ways, channelling their energies into constructive areas, experience greater satisfaction on both professional and personal fronts, leading the researchers to believe that in many cases anger is positively correlated with career progression.
