Hairspray is the story of a bubbly teenager named Tracy Turnblad, an aspiring performer who wishes to gain a place on a local television show called the Corny Collins Show. The show is actually based on a Baltimore-based TV series named the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.

Tracy is an unknown in the performing industry when she tries out, regardless she is chosen for one of the dancing roles and against long odds she becomes a dancing star practically overnight. Tracy is emboldened by this new celebrity status, & she opts to use her recognition to bring about positive improvements to the television program. The essential motivation behind these positive developments is to do with race. Tracy hopes to racially fuse the television show, & as any person could imagine, Tracy is met with substantial opposition.

Hairspray transferred to the West End in London in two-thousand & seven, opening for previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 11, before being opened to the public at its certified opening on October thirtieth, 2007. The theatrical production has had some distinguished actors — Michael Ball takes one of the lead roles as Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s very own mother, offering a realistic interpretation in this difficult female position, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop manager Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the West End also features newcomer to the stage, Leanne Jones, in the role of Tracy.

Hairspray the musical play has got several positive reviews from critics and theatre goers alike. Jacqueline said: “I have been to see the show four times thus far and I will indeed be going back again next week & a few more times also. I love the moment and wish they could stay on longer. Ben Ellis is remarkable as link & Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all marvellous. The musical show hairspray is indeed my favourite, mainly because its optimistic and if you’re feeling low then it is certain to make you feel a great deal happier.
